About Us
The Mumbai International Maritime Arbitration Centre (MIMAC) envisions becoming India’s foremost global institution for maritime, shipping, logistics and international trade dispute resolution. Anchored in Mumbai, the maritime and commercial capital of India, MIMAC aims to serve as the preferred destination for fast, fair, expert and enforceable resolution of maritime and commercial conflicts, both within India and across international jurisdictions.
MIMAC is designed to lead the transformation of India’s dispute resolution ecosystem by providing a cost-effective, professionally administered and sector-specialized arbitration platform. It aspires to establish India as a self-reliant legal and arbitration hub in alignment with national initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat, Sagarmala and the Ease of Doing Business mission. By leveraging India’s vast pool of legal and commercial expertise and combining it with global best practices, MIMAC will redefine dispute resolution through speed, affordability and domain-specific excellence.

Through technology-enabled processes, robust institutional governance and an ethos of integrity and inclusiveness, MIMAC will serve not only as a legal forum but as a strategic economic enabler that contributes to India’s emergence as a global maritime power. Ultimately, MIMAC’s vision is not merely to resolve disputes, but foster trust, reduce risk, and enhance the ease of doing maritime and cross-border business through the rule of law.
MIMAC is founded on a clear set of principles that form the institutional DNA of its operation. These principles ensure that the institution remains aligned with its stakeholders’ expectations while promoting world-class standards of justice, transparency and neutrality.
At the core of MIMAC’s foundation lies the principle of independence and neutrality. Every dispute administered by MIMAC shall be handled with unwavering impartiality, without regard to nationality, commercial influence, or party status. MIMAC exists to serve both Indian and international parties with equal fairness.
The institution is equally grounded in the principle of procedural efficiency. Recognizing that prolonged disputes harm commercial relationships and economic momentum, MIMAC mandates structured case management processes, technology integration and timelines that aim to deliver final awards within 6–12 months, significantly faster than traditional court or arbitration systems.
Affordability and access to justice are foundational to MIMAC. Its tiered fee model, capped arbitrator fees and flat filing cost of USD 1000 make it uniquely attractive, especially to MSMEs, individual seafarers and regional operators. MIMAC is committed to ensuring that high-quality arbitration is not a privilege of the elite, but a right accessible to all stakeholders in India’s and the world’s maritime economy.
MIMAC further embraces the principle of domain specialization. Its panels include experts not only in maritime law but also in commodities like trade bulk liquid, agri-bulk logistics, agri-perishable, bunker quality, shipping finance, seafarer employment, fisheries and offshore engineering etc. This ensures tribunals that are deeply familiar with the technical, operational and commercial realities of each sector.
Another founding pillar is MIMAC’s commitment to technological innovation. Through virtual hearings, e-filing, AI-based bundle sorting (in beta) and blockchain timestamping of awards, MIMAC is a truly digital-first institution, designed for both physical and virtual accessibility across global time zones.
Lastly, MIMAC is founded on the principle of national service and global vision. It is not just an arbitration forum, it is a national institution built to support India’s ambition to become a global maritime hub, legally, economically and geopolitically.
